Course Content:
A theoretical approach to childcare and special needs assisting will be complemented by practical experience. The following modules will be offered subject to availability or demand and are subject to change:

WHAT IS CHILDCARE?
This two-year course aims to prepare students for work with young children in the rapidly expanding world of childcare and crèche supervision/management.
The childcare worker needs social, communication and caring skills to work with individuals and groups. Childcare will lay a foundation for these skills and provide the work experience to put learning into practice. This course will serve as training for crèche/ community care/healthcare industries or as a link to childcare or early childhood education courses in many universities throughout the country and the UK.
Successful graduates can also for positions as a Special Needs Assistant in a range of educational settings. This programme is ideal for both school leavers and experienced mature persons seeking a qualification in this area.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates may pursue level 7/8 Early Childhood degree courses in Maynooth University, DCU, University of Limerick, UCC, Marino Institute of Education, as well as, in TU Dublin Blanchardstown, South East Technological University Carlow. Graduates may apply to progress to Year 3 of Early Childhood degrees in many UK Universities.

- Other equivalent qualification
All applicants will be interviewed regardless of previous qualifications and must successful complete a literacy assessment as part of the entry process. To successfully complete this programme students must have a 80% attendance rate each year. Entry to Year 2 is conditional on successful completion of Year 1.

WHAT IS EDUCATION AND TRAINING?
Students on Education and Training courses at Dunboyne College benefit from close links with Maynooth University and can access a range of academic and student supports across both campuses.
Our one-year course, similar to our other arts programme, aims to prepare students for entrance into Arts programmes in Irish universities and colleges but also lay foundations for those who want to pursue a career as either a primary or post-primary teacher. While the course also prepares students for entry to employment in a range of settings, it is mainly aimed at those who want to pursue careers in the education and training arena.
By progressing to an arts degree or education and training qualification and then on to a post graduate qualification, students can access the many opportunities in the world of education and training. This course basically lays the foundation for those who know education is their first choice of career.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
There are now over 175 places in First Arts in Maynooth, 30 places in UCD as well as numerous places in Universities including DCU, UCC and a large range of other degree courses available in universities for students who hold
a QQI qualification in Education and Training. There are also opportunities in education, training, European
administration, as well as, in the business world. Graduates from this course may gain entry to the BSc Education and Training at DCU.
While there is no direct link to primary teaching from QQI, students on completion of the Level 5 award, may apply through the CAO for a range of available courses as part of the newly expanded QQI Links scheme. These include Education Studies and Early Childhood Studies at Marino Institute of Education, Post-Primary Teacher Education at DCU and Arts Degrees at DCU, Maynooth and UCD. There are also a large range of other degree courses available in universities throughout the country.
On successful completion of an undergraduate degree, students can then apply for the Postgraduate Masters in Education (PME) which enables them to qualify as a primary or post-primary teacher and register with The Teaching Council.

WHAT IS SPECIAL NEEDS AND CLASSROOM ASSISTANT?
This one year course trains students to work as Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) with children with special educational needs in a variety of educational settings including primary and secondary school classrooms and specialist schools.
Students completing this course will be able to work effectively under direction in a special needs assisting setting. They will develop skills to assist children in a range of activities, ensuring equality of opportunity through working in a safe and professional manner. They will learn about development and learning in children with special needs and about the role as an SNA. They will also develop the capacity to work and communicate effectively with parents, families, colleagues and other professionals to safeguard, support and promote children’s learning.
The course is suitable for both school leavers and experienced or mature students seeking a formal qualification.
Additional courses which may be available to students include First Aid.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates can progress directly to employment in a variety of educational contexts and community care settings. This course qualifies students to work as SNAs in primary and secondary school classrooms or special schools, supporting children in their learning environment.
Alternatively, graduates may progress to further studies in specialist social care, psychology, social studies, early childhood care and education degree programmes in a range of Universities and Technological Universities.
