WHAT IS PRE-UNIVERSITY ARTS?

This one-year course will aim to prepare students for entrance into Arts programmes in Irish universities and colleges as well as preparing students to work in a European environment both in Ireland and abroad.

Students will be able to take this cultural option through Archaeology, Folklore and History modules or concentrate on a language option with European Studies.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates may pursue certificate or degree courses in TCD, UCD, DCU, TU Dublin Grangegorman/Tallaght, South East Technological University Carlow, Technological University of the Shannon Athlone, UCC, Atlantic Technological University – St. Angela’s College, Sligo as well as other ITs and colleges around the country or in the UK.

For example, there are up to 21 places in Maynooth University, 30 places in UCD science courses and 10 places in Trinity College in First Science for QQI graduates.

WHAT IS PRE-UNIVERSITY LIBERAL ARTS?

This one-year course, similar to our other arts programme, aims to prepare students for entrance into Arts degrees in Irish universities and colleges, as well as preparing students to work in a European environment both in Ireland and abroad. The Liberal Arts option attributes more of a focus on The Arts, English Literature and European languages. Students will have the option of taking a language, Irish or Spanish, along with European Studies or can focus on a more English Literature based course, which will lead to a general studies option.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There are now over 175 places in First Arts in Maynooth University, 30 places in UCD as well as numerous

places in DCU, Milltown, UCC, Technological University of the Shannon Athlone, South East Technological University Carlow, NUIG, TU Dublin, St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, Marino Institute of Education, American College Dublin, Dun Laoghaire IADT, NCAD, and other colleges and universities for students who hold a

QQI qualification in General Studies or Language and European Studies.

There are also opportunities in education, travel and tourism, European administration, local heritage concerns as well as in the business world through insurance, banking, or international trade.

WHAT IS THEATRE STUDIES AND PERFORMANCE?

This course will facilitate students to appreciate and
learn the skills of Theatre performance, including acting, directing, stage design and production. Through a combination of lectures, workshops and practical exercises students will develop an array of skills. Students will acquire the skills and knowledge to bring characters and stories
to life on stage. In addition to this, you will develop a knowledge of theatre throughout the years and gain a good
understanding of Ireland’s most prolific playwrights.

Course overview

Acting: Students will learn the fundamentals of acting, which include and incorporate techniques for character development, voice projection, including; mime, movement, and improvisation. Students will also have an opportunity to study Irelands greatest performers and liaise with those in industry, with the opportunity to perform scenes from classic and contemporary plays.

Directing: The ability to direct plays a pivotal role in theatre performance and students will have the opportunity to become ensconced in the creative process, including reading scripts, casting, and working with actors. You will also have the opportunity to direct scenes from plays and receive feedback from peers and teachers.

Stage Design: Stage design is integral to theatre performance and students will have an opportunity to learn the basics of stage design, which includes set construction, lighting, sound and costume design. You will also explore the relationship between stage design and performance and how to create a cohesive and effective visual aesthetic for a production.

Production: You will gain first-hand experience of producing a play, including managing budgets, scheduling rehearsals, marketing and PR. You will also develop skills in team building in bring a production to fruition.
