WHAT IS SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND GAMES DESIGN?

The games industry is one of the fastest growing industries globally. This course is aimed at computer games enthusiasts who are interested in pursuing a career in the computer games industry. This one-year course will allow learners to have an extensive knowledge of games software development. Students will develop the skills to be able to design, create and maintain websites, databases and computer networks, as well as the fundamentals of computer programming. The Games Development element is designed to encourage the development of key games development skills especially in the areas of games software programming, design and graphics.

Students who qualify in this area can pursue further study and a career in computing and the games design sector. WHAT IS SOFTWARE CREATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA?

This one-year course will aim to offer participants an introduction to the world of creative digital media, which is one of the fastest growing areas in the software industry as well as information technology which has been a growth area in Ireland for quite some time. From computer games to computer generated movies and from educational multimedia to internet banking, graduates are always in demand. This course will provide an introduction to careers in the computing industry but will also provide an important stepping stone to third level courses leading to exciting careers in the multimedia area.

During the course students may opt to seek work experience with organisations using multimedia and computers in everything from web application to games development.

This one-year course is an ideal entry level qualification for all aspects of the growing online marketing sector in Ireland. WHAT IS COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS?

This one-year computers course is for students who are interested in pursuing a career in the computer industry or the modern technology office. It aims to prepare students for careers that require specialist knowledge in programming, networking implementation, and web technology. WHAT IS GRAPHIC DESIGN?

WHAT IS ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN?

This one-year course is designed to provide learners with the valuable skills needed to work in the architecture and design sectors or to progress to third level options. Learners will gain a firm foundation in Computer Aided Design (CAD), which is used to create graphics and make calculations needed in the production of drawings, three-dimensional simulations, models and other design work. Students will be given the opportunity to prepare a portfolio in architecture or architectural technology to further aid their progression. Learners will gain skills in the areas of building design and sustainability.

    WHAT IS MUSIC PERFORMANCE?

    This course is aimed at developing a musician’s ability in the areas of performance and musical awareness and to further enhance skills through music technology and computer applications. It provides students with hands-on experience and training in the various aspects of the music industry. Live performances and studio recordings are an integral part of the course, which is designed for musicians, songwriters and producers.

    Through continued commitment to rehearsal students develop the discipline that is required to work in the music industry. Students present, produce and perform a number of live performances as part of their course work. These offer an ideal environment in which each student can put the knowledge and skills gained on the course into use.

    WHAT IS SOUND PRODUCTION?

    This one-year course is designed to give students an introduction to the world of sound engineering, the media and the music industry. This course is designed to provide a combination of practical and theoretical tuition in all aspects of digital sound engineering and event production. Students will work in a fully equipped digital studio and be involved in the production of live performance recording.

    The overall aim of the course is to educate students for a variety of career opportunities within the audio industry and related areas. It also aims for students to gain a broad appreciation of the technology; every year more hardware and software becomes available to create music and teach students about music. It’s a hands-on, skills-based course which equips students with a fundamental knowledge of the common applications of music technology.

    WHAT IS AN ART (FINE ART OR DESIGN 2D) COURSE?

    This is a portfolio preparation and general art course for students who wish to gain entry to a third level art college in Ireland or abroad. The emphasis will be placed on the preparation of a balanced portfolio as well as developing skills in the art, craft and design areas.

    The portfolio, showing the students individual sense of design and pattern, can use a wide variety of the modules covered on the course as well as the students own interpretation of colour and design. Depending on the combination of modules a student can achieve a qualification in Fine Art or Design/2D.

    Alternatively, a graduate may seek immediate employment in a range of art, design, animation, craft or community arts type projects. Many students progress to QQI Level 6, or Higher National Diploma and Degree programmes in Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design and so on.

    WHAT IS ANIMATION?

    Students who wish to learn the fundamentals of creation for 2D animated productions, will enjoy the practical and creative elements of this course. Learners will gain skills around character design, animation and creative development through specialist software. Focusing on both drawing and computer skills, students will understand what is required to develop a complete and successful portfolio.  You will receive hands-on training from professionals vastly experienced within the animation industry.

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

    Graduates of the Animation QQI Award can progress to many degree courses, including; Animation, Art, Film and Television, Graphic Design, Illustration and Production, to mention a few. These can be accessed at several universities and IT colleges or private college such as TU Dublin, IADT, Athlone IT, NCAD, DCU, Maynooth University, Tralee IT, Athlone IT, Letterkenny IT and Limerick IT.

    There are several courses at QQI Level 6 or HND that students can access, for example at Ballyfermot College. Many graduates seek direct employment within the sector.
