WHAT IS PRE-UNIVERSITY SCIENCE?

This one-year course is designed to give students an introduction to the world of science and covers a variety of areas related to the sciences. The mathematics element allows students to bring their levels up to the competence relevant to their intended third level course. Students will also have the option to study other modules along with science to shape their qualification for entry to their desired course or area of employment.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates may pursue science certificate or degree courses in TCD, DCU, Maynooth University, UCD, TUD City Campus / Tallaght, UCC, NUIG, Technological University of the Shannon Athlone, Atlantic Technological University Sligo / Letterkenny / St. Angela’s College Sligo, South East Technological University Carlow, Munster Technological University Cork, as well as other ITs and colleges around the country or in the UK. For example, there are up to 21 places in Maynooth University, 30 places in UCD science courses and another 20 places in UCD Agricultural Science courses and 10 places in Trinity in First Year Science for QQI graduates. Graduates can also progress to Physical Education teaching in DCU. Alternatively, students may seek immediate employment in a range of companies and projects that seek graduates with a science aptitude.

WHAT IS PRE-UNIVERSITY AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE?

This one-year course is designed to give students an introduction to Agriculture science and covers a variety of areas related to the study of animal science. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of content related to animal and agri-sciences.

The course offers modules such as Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Biology and Laboratory Skills. Students will also have the option to study other modules within the science sector giving a good grounding for entry into a higher education science degree.

WHAT IS FORENSIC SCIENCE?

This one-year course will introduce students to the basic principles of forensic science. Students will participate in laboratory work, with a particular focus on how evidence is collected and analysed for use in legal cases. Participants will gain a knowledge of the link between the sciences and how these are put to use in the Irish legal system.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates may pursue degree courses such as Digital Forensics and Computer Forensics at TU Dublin Blanchardstown or Waterford Institute of Technology. Students can progress onto the Level 8 QQI award in Applied Social Studies at TU Dublin Blanchardstown. Graduates may also progress onto many other degrees at Level 7 and 8 in Universities and IT or private colleges around the country, along with progression options to the UK. Future areas of employment can include Forensic Medical Examiner, Forensic Engineer, Crime Scene Investigator, Crime Laboratory Analyst.

Alternatively, students may progress directly into employment. Graduates of a Level 7 degree may progress to employment with Forensic Ireland.

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE?

This one-year course introduces students to the core science modules physics, chemistry and biology along with mathematics and environmental studies. The skills and knowledge gained, while studying these subjects, will be invaluable to those seeking to pursue a career in renewable energy, environmental consultancy, waste management, wildlife trusts, nature reserves and parks. It is an excellent introduction for students who wish to progress to third level courses in this area.

WHAT IS SPORTS SCIENCE?

This one-year course introduces students to the broad and expanding sector of Sport Science. An interesting course that will provide students with the skills, knowledge and qualifications necessary to gain employment in the sports sector. With the combination of modules, students can avail of the science award with some coaching modules and sports anatomy and then continue to higher education to study health or sports science.

WHAT IS FOOD SCIENCE?

This one-year course prepares the learner to explore Food Science and the principles of food processing with a view to gaining employment or progressing to further education or training in science, as a food scientist and in the agriculture sector. A food scientist applies their knowledge of biology and chemistry to develop and improve foods and has a role to play in all aspects of the food chain from production, to processing, storage and marketing. This course gives a solid introduction to Food Science and Technology for students who wish to pursue a Food Science Degree in Universities and Institutes of Technology.

WHAT IS ANIMAL SCIENCE?

This course would suit applicants with a passion for working with animals, a willingness to work hard and an interest in biology. Students will receive a solid foundation in Biology and basic Animal Science principles and practices while studying modules within the animal care sectors such as Animal Anatomy and Physiology, Animal Behaviour, Animal Welfare and Biology. This course is an ideal base for students who intend to continue to study at higher education degrees in Veterinary Nursing, Bio-Veterinary and Animal Sciences.
